The Business of You

Business Practice

There's no business like show business, but there are several businesses like accounting.” David Letterman

A simple statement about what seems a simple topic. But if you read between the lines, what it highlights is something quite interesting. How many of us are involved in something special? Something unique? With all the pressures of life looming, too many of us fall into jobs or careers that are simply ordinary. The risk of following ones dream or passion has become too great for the everyday person to take- and isn’t that a sad thought!

Looking at my managers, it occurred to me why some small businesses do well and others fall far short from success- it all comes down to passion. Both came out of university following a career path laid out by their chosen degrees and while doing well, their core strengths were not being utilised or developed. So they took a chance and started up their own company- a venture that has proved both successful and fulfilling (well at least that’s what they tell me!)

That is not to say that your passion won’t lead you onto a difficult and sometime arduous path, but what better reason to push yourself then a field where you have the motivation and potential to grow? I believe strength must first come from basic interest and we all have the potential to be great at something, whatever that may be. But we must first not be afraid to acknowledge what it is and take steps to follow it. Accounting may be all the same to some people, but to others, it may be a world filled with exciting opportunities. And who are we, comic or not, to judge that?
